Art & Culture in Zakopane

From more then one hundred years Zakopane plays important role in development of Polish culture - here is the place where most prominent Polish writers, artists, musiciens and journalists come for rest and for work. From the end of XIX century Tatra Mts - the highest chain in this part of Europe and highlanders' culture as well influenced evolution of whole-country culture.   • The Tatra Museum - main building 10 Krupówki street
    Openning hours: WED-SAT 9.00 - 17.00; SUN 9.00-15.00; MON-TUE closed
    between April 29 and September 30 open also on TUE: 9.00 - 17.00
    Permanent exhibitions: history, ethnography and natural history.
    Though modified over the years, the exhibition in the main building has survived to this day unchanged in its basic concept. As before, the goal is to give the visitor an insight into the most important aspects of the natural environment in the Tatra Mountains and the region of Podhale, the history of the area and the local people’s way of living and culture. read more >>>
  • The Museum of Zakopane Style at Koliba villa18 Kościeliska street

    Architecture and interiors in the Zakopane style.
    The Koliba villa, the first building erected to Stanisław Witkiewicz’s design in the Zakopane Style, is situated at Kościeliska Street, Zakopane’s oldest street with time-honoured houses and characteristic Tatra crofts at every step.   • The Karol Szymanowski Museum at Atma villa19 Kasprusie street
    Szymanowski Museum is closed until 2013!
    Openning hours: TUE-THU 10.00 - 16.00; FRI 10.00 - 18.00; SUN 10.00 - 15.00
    The only Polish museum of the life and work of Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), the greatest Polish composer after Frederic Chopin. Szymanowski gladly stayed in Zakopane ever since he was a young man. Towards the end of his life he settled there for good taking up residence in the Atma. Museum tours are accompanied by pieces of Szymanowski music from a rich sound library.

  • The Kornel Makuszyński Museum 15 Tetmajera street
    Openning hours: WED - SUN 9.30 - 13.30
    The much-loved writer's flat with works of art and his possessions on display.
    The Makuszyński Museum houses merely a fraction of what the writer, an art collector on friendly terms with many outstanding artists, had assembled. The Museum was set up in 1966 following a donation made by Janina Gluzińska-Makuszyńska (1896–1972) the writer’s widow. read more >>>
